I have this exact boat and I’m looking to have it restored. My father bought it new in 1958 and it’s been setting in my garage for the past 5 years. Do you have any recommendations on where I cavils have the work done?
      Thanks

    Hi Andy,

Wonderful paint job on the boat. What is the wet sander do you use, can you make a vid on wet sanding surface? Whats the painting equipment?

    Great job again!

    Thanks,
    Naresh

      Hi Naresh,

The sander I use is made by QuickCut Sanders. Here’s a link There are vids on their website that cover most of what you’ll want to know if you’re looking for something like this 🙂

One thing to mention is that you’ll need a decent sized air compressor to operate it. Mine is a 60 gallon 12CFM model that is barely able to keep up under constant sanding. It does it, but the compressor runs the entire time.

      Hope this helps!

I am restoring the gunwales of an older boat with lots of spider cracks and this has been very informative. I am going to use the technique that you showcased in this three video series. Thank you! What is the name of the quick setting fairing compound that you are using? Would it be ok to gelcoat over the fairing compound? Could you have used epoxy with microspheres?

    • ~Andy says:

Hey John, If you’re going to be applying gelcoat over top of the repairs, I would recommend using a product called AdTech p-14 Ultra Filler (in white) for the filling / fairing.

Also, if you’re sticking with gelcoat for a finished surface you’ll want to steer away from using any kind of epoxy during the repair process (adhesion issues); stick with using polyester or vinylester resins for the glasswork 🙂

      Hope this helps!

I just got a 1957 Glass Magic Nomad for free and it needs much the same work as this one (if not more). I’ve never worked with fiberglass before and have been looking for good information on how to approach the repair process. Thanks for the videos!

Many great thanks to you and friends..
a couple of items I need information on, one is putting boat on stands..jacks…I have 1986 bay liner cg 1900 br…about 19 feet. 1600 pounds…..would like to put new coating of gel coat on her…..a little scared on putting it on jacks…..are they sold by weights for boat,,,and how many are very safe for boat?
Second is, I watched you paint top and sides of boat….but I did not see you paint bottom of boat……using gel coat, would you paint around jacks…move jacks…and then paint where jacks were? I would love to put 2 x 6 boards from starboard to port under gun whales, and hang boat..spray bottom all at once…but nothing is very simple any more…
Do thank you…and love you sharing you knowledge with us…..you have made live a lot better for tons of us.
